In 1970, Steve McQueen arrived in France to film Le Mans. He wore Gulf-blue overalls with the Heuer logo on the chest — and on his wrist, a square blue chronograph that had struggled to find its audience. By the time the film came out, the Monaco was a legend.

A square that broke the rules
The Monaco put a chronograph inside a square, water-resistant case, and it was among the first watches to run on a self-winding chronograph movement. This edition keeps the codes intact: the square case, the square counters, the blue dial.

The Gulf Blue Dial
A sunray blue dial carries the unmistakable pale blue and orange Gulf stripes. Two square counters, applied indexes and a vivid orange chronograph hand preserve the Monaco's bold geometry.

Readable After Dark
Hands and indexes are filled with luminous material that holds its charge through the night. In darkness the dial strips back to the essentials: time, running seconds and chronograph.

The Square Case
39 mm of brushed and polished steel in the shape that made the Monaco an icon. Case, crystal and counters follow the same square geometry, corner to corner.

The Racing Strap
A strap in racing blue, cut to the width of the case and closed by a steel folding clasp. Made to be worn every day, not kept in a drawer.

Automatic chronograph
A self-winding chronograph movement drives the central seconds and the square counters. It descends from the 1969 idea that started it all: a chronograph that winds itself, inside a case that keeps the water out.

In the film, McQueen's driver barely speaks. The blue overalls, the Gulf patch and the square chronograph did the talking — and turned a slow-selling Heuer into one of the most recognisable watches ever made.

Marigold orange.
The colours first lined up on the grid in the late 1960s. A Gulf-liveried Ford GT40 won Le Mans in 1968 and again in 1969, and the Porsche 917 carried the same livery into the 1970s. Few racing colours are recognised faster, and none sits more naturally on a racing chronograph.
